INCONTOURNABLE SI L'AÉROSPATIALE VOUS PASSIONNE !

Over an eight month period in 2015-2016, a team of sixteen engineers-in-training of six different nationalities - Canadian, French, Indian, Spanish, Iranian and Venezuelan - created the company Pyloneers Inc. With different backgrounds, they combined their efforts to deliver the detailed, manufacturable, and certifiable design of a pylon for the retrofit of Pratt & Whitney Canada PW305A engines on a Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft. The same concurrent engineering methods that are used in the aerospace industry were adopted in order to deliver a solution fulfilling the requirements of the industrial partners: Bombardier Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Bell Helicopter and Transport Canada. Throughout the project, these partners acted both as clients and consultants to the team.

Pyloneers divided the team into six departments to cover the various aspects of this multidisciplinary integration project in engineering, namely: management, structures, systems, manufacturing, testing, and certification. The work was completed within a strict schedule and budget, and included five development phases, with activities ranging from requirements identification, to the exploration of concepts, to the final production-ready design, to the company business case and production plans. Specific deliverables were produced at each design review. The structure and systems design departments worked together to integrate their respective designs, while manufacturing and certification departments worked alongside to ensure their feasibility. A test prototype of the front engine mount was manufactured in order for the testing department to validate the design methodology used by the designers.

During these months working together, Pyloneers built a real integrated product development team. They learnt how to communicate professionally and efficiently in a technical environment, both with industrial partners and internally. The project is a complete immersion within the aerospace industry, and each of the team members has gained valuable experience which is not often taught in school.
